When necessary, the Woodbury County Communications Center can add an interpreter from an outside service to the line. It takes just a few seconds to get an interpreter on the line to assist a non-English speaking caller.
The Woodbury County Communications Center has a special text telephone interface for responding to 9-1-1 calls from deaf or hearing/speech impaired callers. All telephone lines in the Woodbury County Communications Center are equipped with this function - both emergency and non-emergency lines.
9-1-1 is the number most people in the United States call to get help in a police, fire or medical emergency. A 9-1-1 call goes over dedicated phone lines to the 9-1-1 answering point and trained personnel then send the emergency help needed.
Enhanced 9-1-1 is a system which routes an emergency call to the 9-1-1 center and automatically displays the caller's phone number and address. The 9-1-1 call taker will verify the information, which appears on his or her computer screen. In most areas, the location of wireless or cell phone 9-1-1 calls is not yet available.
9-1-1 is only to be used in emergency situations. An emergency is any situations that requires immediate assistance from the police, sheriff, fire department or an ambulance.
